The Wilkesboro Police Department was formed with the first documented officer appointed in 1889. It wasn't until the 1970's that police services were expanded into an actual "department" with additional officers. Today, there are 23 officers serving a town of about 3,500 residents within Wilkes county, which has about 66,000 residents.
Although a small town, the department answers in excess of 15,000 calls for service per year.
Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Wilkesboro is the county seat of Wilkes County. This rapid growing community covers 8 square miles. Major corridors US 421, NC 16, NC 18 and NC 268 bring tens of thousands of people to work at our businesses like Tyson Foods and Lowe's Companies as well as vacation travelers to the beautiful area that is ours. Over 400 businesses are located within the town. A local YMCA facility and public parks serve as recreational areas. Nearby you will find W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir for water activities and camping. Wilkes Community College, located in the town provides excellent in-service training programs for law enforcement in addition to offering a two-year Criminal Justice Program. The college also hosts one of America's premiere Americana musical productions during Merlefest.
