Special Weapons And Tactics (S.W.A.T.)
The Wilkesboro Police Department "SWAT" Team was formed in 2002 and consists of full time members of the police department. Members are selected on a voluntary basis and receive monthly training in the different objectives as outlined below.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Wilkesboro Police Department "SWAT" Team is to provide the Town of Wilkesboro with a specially trained team designed to rapidly respond to any and all critical incidents within the jurisdiction of the police department.
Purpose
The purpose of the "SWAT" unit is to enhance the police department’s capabilities when responding to a situation that may call for an increased number of officers or involve a high-risk incident. Some examples of these situations include, but are not limited to the following:
- Fatality or major injury motor vehicle accidents
- Bomb Threats
- Aggravated suicide attempts
- Armed and/or barricaded suspects
- High risk building searches
- Dignitary/VIP protection
- High-risk search and/or arrest warrants
- Active shooter/sniper
- Public/Community relations
NOTE: Equipment and training for this program was provided through donations and/or services from businesses and private individuals.
